Birchip Campus redevelopment

The Victorian Government invested $9.5 million to redevelop East Wimmera Health Service’s Birchip Campus.

This $9.5 million includes funding from the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund and integrates acute and aged care services under one roof.

The project delivered a new hospital building including 12 aged care beds, three acute inpatient beds and incorporate urgent care facilities. The refurbishment of the existing building also aimed to improve amenities for East Wimmera Health Service staff.

The $790 million Regional Health Infrastructure Fund is the largest grant program of its kind in Victorian history. It provides vital government funding to rural and regional public health and residential aged care services across Victoria. This funding enables these services to continue to provide safe and efficient care to local communities.

The Birchip Campus redevelopment project delivered a new building for urgent care services, including:

  • 12 aged care beds
  • three acute inpatient beds
  • urgent care facilities
  • staff facilities.

The existing hospital building was also partly refurbished and extended to create new administrative, consulting and back of house areas, including:

  • new reception and waiting areas
  • medical records room
  • management offices
  • salon
  • education/meeting space
  • internal courtyard
  • back-of-house facilities including storage and a new laundry. 

This $9.5 million project included funding from the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

The Birchip Campus aged care redevelopment project aimed to achieve the following benefits:

Acute and aged care services under one roof

All bed-based services were consolidated within a single new contemporary building.

Improvements for staff

The reconfigured site and integration of services aimed to improve amenities for East Wimmera Health Service staff. 

Largest program of its kind

The $790 million Regional Health Infrastructure Fund is the largest grant program of its kind in Victorian history. It enables rural and regional public health and residential aged care services to invest in modern infrastructure and equipment. This supports the services to continue to provide safe and efficient care to local communities.

Funding for this project was administered by the Victorian Health Building Authority through the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

This project was delivered by East Wimmera Health Service in partnership with:

  • Baldasso Cortese (architect)
  • AW Nicholson Construction.
