Casey Hospital expansion project

Location 62-70 Kangan Drive, Berwick, Victoria, 3806, Australia

The $135 million Casey Hospital expansion project aimed to increase the range and capacity of services Casey Hospital provides to one of Victoria’s fastest-growing regions.

This major expansion included six new operating theatres and two upgraded theatres. It also provided 128 new multi-day beds, 12 intensive care unit beds and 12 day surgery beds.

This means Casey Hospital will be able to treat more than 25,800 extra patients a year, and perform an extra 8,000 procedures and support an extra 1,300 births each year.

The expansion will allow Casey Hospital to meet the soaring demand for healthcare in Melbourne’s outer south east.

JOBS CREATED DURING CONSTRUCTION

The Victorian Government committed $106.3 million in the 2015-16 Budget to expand the Casey Hospital. Then, recognising the unprecedented demand for health services in the area, the government committed an extra $28.61 million. The total of this project is now $134.91 million.

This major expansion of Casey Hospital included the construction of a new clinical tower which accommodates:

  • 128 multiday inpatient beds
  • 12-bed intensive care unit
  • eight operating theatres (six new operating theatres and two refurbished theatres)
  • new central sterilising services unit.

Other works included:

  • a redeveloped emergency department short stay unit
  • 12-bed day surgery unit
  • refurbishment and expansion works to pharmacy, pathology, back of house and kitchen facilities
  • dedicated teaching and training facilities (in partnership with Monash University)
  • additional generator backup capacity
  • expanded main entry with new café/retail area
  • 333 additional car parking spaces (mix of public and staff).

The project was delivered in four phases:

  • Stage 1 – new front entry building (including Monash University teaching space and café/retail area).  Completed in September 2018.
  • Stage 2 – new pharmacy including sterile manufacturing suite, pathology and upgraded kitchen. Completed in May 2020.
  • Stage 3 – short stay unit, operating theatres and central sterile services unit. Completed in October 2019.
  • Stage 4 – clinical tower (includes 128 inpatient beds and 12 intensive care unit beds) Completed March 2020 and 12-bed day surgery unit in April 2020.

The Casey Hospital expansion project aimed to achieve the following benefits:

More services to meet growing demand

This major expansion will enable Casey Hospital to treat more than 25,800 extra patients, perform 8,000 more procedures and support an extra 1,300 births each year. This helps to reduce wait times, treat patients with higher acuity care needs and cater for increasing demand in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas.

Care closer to home

Services will be offered right in Melbourne’s outer south-east. This means locals can be treated closer to home, without the need to transfer to other hospitals.  This also means less pressure on surrounding hospitals.

Investing in education

Monash University will provide dedicated teaching and learning facilities at the expanded Casey Hospital. The ‘Education Hub’ will help meet the expected increase in the number of medical, nursing and allied health student placement opportunities arising from the expansion.

Local jobs

The project created 92 new jobs during construction including 21 apprentices, trainees and cadets.

This project was delivered by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority in partnership with:

  • Monash Health
  • Plenary Health consortium – Plenary Group, Watpac (builder) and Brookfield GIS (facility manager).

Please note: As of 1 February 2021, the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) became the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA).
