Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment

Location 25 Ryot Street, Warrnambool, Victoria, 3280, Australia

The Victorian Government is investing $384.2 million to deliver the Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment.

A new multi-storey clinical services building will deliver a bigger emergency department, more operating theatres, an extra 22 inpatient beds and dedicated areas for medical imaging and dialysis.

With more families choosing to make Warrnambool home, a dedicated 10-bed paediatric unit will provide specialised care to children and young people.

Construction of a new off-site Regional Logistics Distribution Centre (RLDC) was completed in January 2024. The RLDC was purpose-built to provide commercial linen services and a modern healthcare supply and logistics warehouse. Relocating these services has freed up space at the hospital for the new multi-storey building.

The redevelopment will transform services at the hospital, giving Victoria’s south-west community access to world-class healthcare facilities, close to home.

The Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment will deliver:

  • a new multi-storey clinical services building
  • a bigger emergency department
  • a new suite of operating theatres
  • an additional 22 inpatient beds
  • a dedicated paediatric unit
  • clinical accommodation for pathology services, medical imaging, dialysis and central sterile services
  • a new, off-site Regional Logistics Distribution Centre (RLDC).

There will be up to 400 parking spaces for hospital use during and after construction of the redevelopment.

Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment aims to achieve the following benefits:

Improved patient experience and staff safety

The redevelopment will improve patient triage within the emergency department, reducing emergency and surgery wait times and enhancing safety for both staff and patients.

Patient wellbeing

Modern facilities, amenities and equipment will support better care and patient wellbeing.

Better access to services

Increased service capacity will provide more access for people living locally, reducing wait times and enabling patients to access more clinical support services closer to home.

A boost in local jobs

The redevelopment will create around 800 jobs during construction. This will provide a boost to the local economy.

We asked the community to have a say on key indoor and outdoor spaces in the redevelopment. Community feedback is helping shape this significant investment for Warrnambool and surrounding communities, ensuring the best outcome for local families.

This project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with:

  • South West Healthcare
  • Billard Leece Partnership (architects)
  • AECOM Australia (building services engineering consultants)
  • Hansen Yuncken (builder - Regional Logistics Distribution Centre, and builder - early works for main hospital redevelopment).

Regional Logistics Distribution Centre

Hansen Yuncken was the lead contractor for the delivery for the RLDC.

Early works

Hansen Yuncken was appointed to deliver early works on the main hospital redevelopment in January 2024.

Early works are underway at Warrnambool Base Hospital in preparation for major construction on the redevelopment to start in 2025.

We'll be working closely with South West Healthcare and the community to regularly monitor and minimise disruptions to neighbouring residents and businesses wherever possible.

However, during construction, you may notice:

  • localised noise and vibration
  • dust
  • access changes
  • increased vehicle and people movements.

We're committed to keeping the community updated. We will notify neighbouring residents and businesses ahead of major activity and as works progress.

Pedestrian and road changes

Timor Street between Hyland Street and Ryot Street is temporarily closed to west bound traffic to support safe access to the redevelopment site. As a result of the changed conditions, traffic is only permitted to travel one way in the east direction from Hyland Street to Ryot Street.

These changes are required to allow for the safe movement of large construction vehicles to the redevelopment site.

For your safety, please remain alert and follow any signage in place.

Contact the team

If you have any questions about what's happening on-site, please contact the Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment team by emailing wbhenquiry@health.vic.gov.au.

Warrnambool Base Hospital, including the emergency department, will remain fully operational throughout the redevelopment to ensure continuity of care for the community.

We're working closely with South West Healthcare to minimise disruption to staff, patients and the community.
