Werribee Mercy Hospital critical care expansion

Location 300-310 Princes Highway, Werribee, Victoria, 3030, Australia

The $87 million Werribee Mercy Hospital critical care expansion was completed in August 2018.

The expansion aimed to meet increasing demand in Melbourne’s west – one of the nation’s fastest growing communities.

The project added four more levels on top of the existing Catherine McAuley Centre at Werribee Mercy Hospital. It added new inpatient beds, new critical care beds, new operating theatres and a 370-space multi-level carpark.

Wyndham’s population is expected to increase by 193,000 people over the next 20 years. The Werribee Mercy Hospital critical care expansion aimed to ensure that the people of the Wyndham community continue to receive high-quality critical care closer to home.

The critical care expansion added four more levels on top of the existing Catherine McAuley Centre. It expanded acute services by providing:

  • 56 additional inpatient beds
  • 8 new critical care beds
  • 6 new operating theatres
  • a new central sterilisation supply department and staff support areas.

The expansion also provided a new back of house kitchen and loading dock, and a 370-space multi-level car park.

The Werribee Mercy Hospital critical care expansion aimed to deliver the following benefits:

Better access to services

The expansion of services at Werribee Mercy Hospital aimed to provide increased access to health services. It was designed to allow Werribee Mercy Hospital to provide more efficient healthcare through better use of existing resources, and to improve patient outcomes by expanding the range of services offered locally.

Improved waiting times

The expansion aimed to enable Werribee Mercy Hospital to improve waiting times for elective surgery and the emergency department.

More services for a growing community

The Wyndham community population is predicted to increase by 193,000 people by 2031. The hospital expansion aimed to address the rapidly growing demand from this burgeoning community.

Improved parking access

The expansion added a new 370-space multi-level car park aimed at improving parking access for patients, visitors and staff.

This project was delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with:
