Ballarat Health Services cardiac catheterisation laboratory

Location 1 Drummond Street N, Ballarat Central, Victoria, 3350, Australia

The $10 million Ballarat Health Services cardiac catheterisation laboratory project at Ballarat Base Hospital was completed in August 2017.

It is designed to support more people in western Victoria to access urgent heart assessment, treatment and care – closer to home.

Cardiac catheterisation laboratories are used for lifesaving heart procedures such as stenting, angiography, inserting pacemakers and implantable defibrillators.

This cardiac catheterisation laboratory is the second for Ballarat Health Services. It includes additional waiting space to significantly increase capacity.

The Ballarat Health Services cardiac catheterisation laboratory at Ballarat Base Hospital project delivered

  • a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory
  • 12 recovery beds
  • a new dedicated cardiac suite
  • a new dedicated interventional radiology suite.

The Ballarat Health Services cardiac catheterisation laboratory project aimed to deliver the following benefits:

Local treatment

Cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer of adults in Australia and people who live outside capital cities are at much greater risk. Ballarat has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in Victoria. Having a second cath lab at Ballarat Base Hospital means more people can be treated sooner. Now, instead of having to go to Melbourne or Geelong, the people of western Victoria can have their cardiovascular conditions treated closer to home, with modern technology.

This project was delivered by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority in partnership with:

  • Ballarat Health Services
  • Billard Leece Partnership (architect)
  • S J Weir (local construction company).

Please note: As of 1 February 2021, the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) became the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA).
