Mildura Base Hospital intensive care unit expansion

The $2.47 million Mildura Base Hospital intensive care unit expansion was completed in June 2019.

The project expanded the intensive care unit from five to eight beds, reconfigured and upgraded existing rooms and added two more short-stay beds. The expansion aimed to improve patient flow and waiting times.

This project was funded through the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund (RHIF). The $490 million fund is the largest grant program of its kind in Victorian history. It provides vital government funding to rural and regional public health and residential aged care services across Victoria so these services can continue to provide safe and efficient care to local communities.

The Mildura Base Hospital intensive care unit expansion project was funded through the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund and delivered:

  • three new intensive care unit beds, increasing capacity from five to eight beds 
  • two new short-stay beds
  • reconfiguration and upgrade of existing rooms
  • upgrades to ancillary support spaces.

The Mildura Base Hospital intensive care unit expansion aimed to achieve the following benefits:

Efficiency and access, closer to home

The expansion project was designed to support the hospital to improve patient flow and reduce waiting times. This means that local patients can access quality intensive care, closer to home.

Flexibility

The expansion of the intensive care unit can enable greater flexibility between intensive care, high dependency and coronary care specialties. The unit also now has better capacity to provide high quality coronary care.

Largest grant program of its kind

The Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, which includes the Aged Care Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, is the largest grant program of its kind in Victorian history. The $490 million fund enables rural and regional public health and residential aged care services to invest in modern infrastructure and equipment to continue providing safe and efficient care to local communities.

Funding for this project was administered by the Victorian Health Building Authority through the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

The project was delivered by Ramsay Health Care in partnership with:

  • King Construction Group (builder).
