Scope
The Victorian Government committed $14.6 million in the 2016 State Budget for a new Early in Life Mental Health Service (ELMHS) facility located within the Monash Children’s Hospital.
The project was completed in November 2017 and included:
- a 20-bed Adolescent Inpatient Unit (known as Stepping Stones)
- a new eight-bed Children's Neurodevelopment Unit (known as the Oasis).
The new facilities enable Monash Health to deliver specialised paediatric services to a growing population in the south east of Victoria.
Benefits
The Early in Life Mental Health Services project at Monash Children’s Hospital aimed to achieve the following benefits:
Specialised services
Infants, children and young people experiencing mental health issues, and their families, can now access specialised services and support.
This includes treatment for behaviour disorders linked to mental illness, such as conduct disorder, depression and anxiety. The ELMHS also provides treatment and care to children who are experiencing significant disruptive behaviour disorders.
Increased capacity for complex care
Children aged 0-12 with complex developmental problems, like autism or intellectual disability combined with social and relational challenges, can now receive specialist care in the new eight-bed Neurodevelopmental Service.
Statewide access
Specialised services and support are now available for infants, children and young people, and their families living anywhere in Victoria. Assessment, treatment and support services are available to young Victorians who are vulnerable and disadvantaged with priority given to Aboriginal children and their families.
Partners
This project was delivered by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority in partnership with:
- Monash Health
- Silver Thomas Henley (architect)
- Lendlease Building (builder).
Please note: As of 1 February 2021, the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) became the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA).
