Ballarat Base Hospital enters final stage of construction

Construction of the final stage of the $655 million Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment is now underway.

The final stage is being delivered by Built and includes construction of a new multi-level hospital tower and a new main entrance on Sturt Street.

The new tower will feature:

  • a new emergency department
  • a mental health, alcohol, and other drugs hub
  • a women and children's hub
  • a state-of-the-art operating theatre suite
  • an extra 100 inpatient and short stay beds.

The site will transform over the next 12 months, starting with piling works, excavation, and demolition works later this year to prepare the site for the new tower.

In this video, watch a simulation of the new hospital tower being built.

Social procurement

The main works will support up to 480 jobs during peak construction, providing a major economic boost to the region. The new tower will be built using at least 90 per cent local building materials, with a focus on supporting social enterprises and First Nations businesses.

Construction progress

Stage two of the redevelopment included delivery of an expanded multi-deck carpark which will provide an extra 400 spaces. It also included the hospital's new central energy plant and support services (CEPSS) building. The upgraded carpark is expected to open in August this year. The CEPSS is on track for completion by the end of the year.

Your bigger and better Ballarat Base Hospital

The Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment received an extra $60 million funding in the 2024-2025 State Budget. This includes $54.6 million to deliver a fitted-out and expanded women's and children's hub and an extra $5.4 million to deliver the emergency department's mental health, alcohol, and other drugs hub.

Once complete, the redeveloped Ballarat Base Hospital will have the capacity to treat at least 18,000 more emergency patients and an extra 14,500 inpatients per year.
