Ballarat Base Hospital new multi-deck carpark is now open

An extra 400 carparks are now open at the Ballarat Base Hospital, with the completion of the new multi-deck carpark.

More than 40,000 hours and 500 tonnes of steel went into extending the carpark to eight stories, which has doubled its capacity from 400 to around 800 spaces. The 400 extra spaces were delivered as part of the Victorian Government's Regional Car Parks Fund, which is delivering 1,000 new spaces across Ballarat.

The parking boost will address one of the main priorities identified throughout community consultation, in which locals contributed more than 1,000 pieces of input through surveys and workshops.

Construction progress

Stage two: Carpark and central energy plant (underway)

Delivered by John Holland, stage two includes the new carpark, temporarily moving the helipad landing zone and delivering the central energy and support services plant (CEPSS) building on Drummond St.

The CEPSS building will provide power, heating and cooling to the hospital, including backup power during disruptions. It will also house a state-of-the-art pharmacy, pathology services and an Education and Learning Centre for Grampians Health and Deakin Rural Clinical School. Construction is on track for completion late 2024.

Stage three: Main works (underway)

Built is delivering the third – and final – stage of construction. Main works include a new main entrance off Sturt Street that leads to a new ground floor emergency department and new multi-level hospital tower (including rooftop helipad). The new helipad will enable direct access to the emergency department and operating theatres. Early works construction has started, paving the way for demolition and major construction.

The redevelopment is on track for completion in 2027.

Once complete, the redeveloped Ballarat Base Hospital will have capacity to treat at least 18,000 more emergency patients and an extra 14,500 inpatients per year.
