We've appointed a builder for the multi-million-dollar expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital's emergency department. Main works have now begun.
Besix Watpac will deliver the works. The project will double the existing emergency department's capacity and support an extra 25,000 presentations every year.
More treatment spaces on the way
The expansion will increase treatment spaces at the hospital from 33 to 67. This includes:
- four new resuscitation bays
- 16 short stay beds
- 36 emergency care cubicles.
The expansion will ease pressure on the existing emergency department. Doctors, nurses, allied health workers and support services will be able to operate in a bigger, state-of-the-art facility. This will ensure they can deliver the best possible emergency care.
The increased capacity will also mean more local patients can access the emergency care and treatment they need.
About the Werribee Mercy Hospital emergency department expansion
The project forms part of a $280 million investment by the Victorian Government. This investment will boost the capacity of the emergency departments at Werribee Mercy Hospital and Casey Hospital, Berwick.
The Werribee Mercy project is on track to be completed in 2026. It is expected to create and sustain more than 300 construction industry jobs.
The project is an addition to the $120 million expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital completed in 2018. This expansion delivered:
- new inpatient beds
- new critical care beds
- new operating theatres
- 54 extra mental health beds
