Builder appointed to deliver Australia’s first Victorian Heart Hospital

The final contracts have been signed and the managing contractor appointed to start early works on Australia’s first dedicated, state-of-the-art cardiac facility – the landmark Victorian Heart Hospital.

John Holland will be constructing the $564 million* hospital and have a proven track record for delivering industry-leading projects including the innovative St Andrew’s Hospital in Ipswich, Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital and Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane.

Located on the Monash University Clayton campus in Melbourne’s south-east, the stand-alone Victorian Heart Hospital will bring together the state’s leading cardiac specialists and researchers to provide life-saving diagnosis and treatment for thousands of patients each year.

The architecture of the new facility draws upon principles of biophilic design which seeks to improve health and wellbeing outcomes by increasing patient connection to the natural environment. This will be achieved through the introduction of light-filled interiors and a strong connection to the outdoors, whilst maximising the surrounding native landscape through external window views.

The building’s environmental impact will also be minimised through incorporating passive design strategies such as working with the natural climatic conditions to enable resilient and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, whilst also lowering the building’s carbon footprint through using locally-sourced materials.

With early works starting in coming months, the project is also expected to create more than 1,700 jobs during construction, with the hospital due to be completed in late 2022.
