Construction update: Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment

Major progress is being made on the site of the Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment.

Foundation works for the new multi-level hospital tower are progressing, and include:

  • installation of retention piles into the earth to establish a strong foundation
  • bulk excavation of soil and rock
  • demolition of existing buildings.

TEXT ON SCREEN: It's been busy on the site of the $655 million Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment. The final stage of this massive project is well underway with excavation, piling and demolition works progressing to get the foundation ready for the new hospital tower.

Site activity

Since main works started, the project has had:

  • 161 retention piles installed underground (94 remaining)
  • more than 23,000 cubic metres of soil removed
  • 95 per cent of hard demolition done
  • 481 workers inducted to the site
  • more than 80,000 combined hours worked.

Around 95 per cent of the demolition materials are being recycled, including more than 11 tonnes of concrete.

About your Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment

The massive redevelopment is delivering a new hospital tower with:

  • a new main entrance off Sturt Street
  • a new emergency department
  • 100 more inpatient and short stay beds
  • a new state-of-the-art theatre suite
  • a new helipad
  • a new and expanded women and children’s hub
  • a new and expanded critical care floor.

The redevelopment has already delivered a new Central Energy Plant and Support Services (CEPSS) building on Drummond Street, and an expansion to the multi-deck carpark.
