Construction of the $1.5 billion new Footscray Hospital is now underway, with designs for the hospital’s striking exteriors, expansive green spaces and street entries also released.
The new hospital will be operated by Western Health. It will treat almost 15,000 more patients and allow almost 20,000 extra people to be seen the emergency department each year. There will also be a significant increase in mental health beds and more outpatient, palliative care and surgical services.
The new ‘People’s Hospital’ for the west will be a community asset and include:
- childcare
- gymnasium
- pharmacy
- general practice facilities
- community health facilities
- cafes
- retail and office spaces.
The designs reveal the hospital’s striking exteriors, street entries and green spaces. These have been carefully considered to create a welcoming atmosphere for patients, families and staff.
Additionally, the site has provided a unique and exciting opportunity to create a leading health and education precinct.
As part of the project, staff and students at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus will have a direct connection to the new hospital via a footbridge over Ballarat Road, where Victoria University will have dedicated education and research facilities.
The project is the largest health infrastructure development in Victoria’s history.
