Please note: As of 1 February 2021, the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) became the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA).
The Victorian Government has announced an additional $80 million in this year’s state budget for the redevelopment of the Ballarat Base Hospital, bringing the total investment in the world-class facility to $541.6 million.
The additional investment will support the construction of a new central energy plant to power the bigger and better hospital, being developed in partnership with Ballarat Health Services. Construction of the new plant will also include a new pharmacy, pathology and centre for education and training.
This will pave the way for the construction of a new multi-level hospital tower, which will include:
- a new emergency department
- a new women and children’s hub and expanded critical care floor
- a state-of-the-art theatre suite
- an extra 100 inpatient and short-stay beds.
A new and expanded critical care floor will bring together an intensive care unit, operating theatres, procedure rooms, endoscopy suites and consulting rooms.
Once completed, the hospital will have capacity to treat at least 18,000 more emergency patients and 14,500 more inpatients, and provide capacity for an additional 4,000 surgeries each year.
The redevelopment will be completed over multiple stages. Construction of the central energy plant will commence in 2021 with the final stage of the redevelopment expected to be completed in 2027.
The project will also boost employment in the region, with more than 1,400 construction jobs expected to be created. Once fully operational, up to 1,000 extra positions will be created at the hospital.
