About the expansion

The expanded hospital features:

  • a new emergency department resuscitation bay
  • six intensive care unit beds
  • 14 medical and surgical beds
  • 44 inpatient beds
  • a medical imaging and pathology unit
  • a central sterile services department.

The expansion also delivered three new operating suites. This will allow an extra 6,200 more elective surgeries to go ahead each year.

Maternity services have been expanded, ensuring more mums can give birth closer to home. The project added:

  • two new birthing suites
  • six maternity beds
  • six special care nursery cots
  • a kids play area.

A $6.5 million, six-bed emergency department mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub was also built. It means people presenting with mental health and alcohol and other drug issues can get the right support, sooner. This will take pressure off the general emergency department, which can focus on other patients.

About the Latrobe Regional Hospital expansion

A $73 million expansion of the Latrobe Regional Hospital (Stage 2) was completed in 2017. This stage delivered:

  • 30 new acute inpatient beds
  • 12 short stay beds
  • a new emergency department
  • Gippsland's first cardiac catheterisation laboratory.
