End of transcript

The refurbishment of the emergency department is part of a $76.3 million expansion and traffic improvement project.

The refurbishment includes 41 adult emergency bays. It also features a new six-bed Emergency Department Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Hub – one of six being delivered across the state. The Hub is expected to open in early 2022.

These facilities connect to the new emergency department expansion at Monash Medical Centre which opened in March 2021. The new emergency department includes a dedicated children’s emergency area that’s purpose built for families - making trips to the emergency department less scary for kids.

Once operational, the expansion and refurbishment of the Monash Medical Centre will help treat an estimated 46,000 additional emergency department presentations every year.

What's next?

Access for ambulances arriving at Monash Medical Centre is being improved. This will ensure patients access the vital care they need faster.

Works to improve traffic flow for patients and staff accessing the hospital are on track to be completed in the first half of 2022.
