Expressions of interest have now closed for local artists to commission a piece for the new Footscray Hospital.
Under the theme ‘Journey to Footscray’, the successful applicant’s artwork will welcome visitors at the new hospital’s entrance, The art will aim to promote health and wellbeing within the hospital and create a healing atmosphere.
Artists who come from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Artists can apply in any language.
The commission is a collaboration between:
- Victorian Health Building Authority
- Plenary Health – the consortium delivering the hospital
- Footscray Community Arts - the official arts partner for the New Footscray Hospital Project.
Art theme
‘Journey to Footscray’ is the theme. Applicants are encouraged to share their unique story of migration to Melbourne’s western suburbs through art.
‘Of Place’ describes the framework for the public art in the new Footscray Hospital. It celebrates all that makes the western suburbs so special.

Your new Footscray Hospital
The new Footscray Hospital is being built in the heart of Footscray on the corner of Geelong and Ballarat Road. Construction has reached the halfway mark with the first three buildings having recently reached structural completion.
Once complete the hospital will have more than 500 beds. It will be able to treat almost 15,000 more patients and allow almost 20,000 extra people to be seen by the emergency department each year. There will also be more outpatient, mental health, palliative care and surgical services.
