Shepparton Hospital redevelopment reaches another milestone and more funding announced

The major expansion of Goulburn Valley Health Shepparton Hospital is one step closer to providing better care and more services to local patients, with the building’s external structure and the roof installation now complete.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos visited the site today to inspect the works and tour the new state-of-the-art dialysis unit.

The redevelopment of the hospital will double the capacity of the emergency department and deliver a more efficient layout so that more patients can be treated faster. When complete, the expanded emergency facilities will provide 36 treatment spaces and nine short stay beds for patients who need care for less than 24 hours.

Other features of the new building include 64 inpatient beds, 10 intensive care beds, seven operating theatres and a new kitchen.

Local mums will also have everything they need to start a family closer to home with a 12-bed maternity unit, 10-cot special care nursery and a 12-bed paediatric ward included in the development.

A separate single-storey dialysis department with 16 chairs is currently being fitted out by builders and will be ready next month. Once complete, it will double the number of dialysis units at the hospital.

This landmark redevelopment project has created more than 140 jobs in construction.

Extra funding announced

The Victorian Government also announced a $58 million funding boost for the project, bringing the investment in Goulburn Valley Health Shepparton Hospital to $229.3 million.

This additional funding will deliver round-the-clock imaging capability in the expanded emergency department, including two new X-ray rooms, a CT scan room and an ultrasound room. An extra operating theatre will also be fitted out, bringing the total to four new theatres.
