Residents of St George’s Hospital aged care in Kew will soon be able to call our new $55.57 million aged care development home.
The facility has been named ‘Berengarra’, a Wurundjeri name meaning ‘the land around Kew’. The name was developed in consultation with the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Aboriginal Health Unit.
Construction of the new 90-bed facility was completed in 2020. It includes two three-storey houses located at the rear of the existing St George’s Hospital.
Thirty residents will live on each floor in smaller household pods designed to provide a more home-like environment with modern facilities and domestic-style kitchens.
Residents will have their own spacious private rooms with ensuite and garden outlook. This will provide greater privacy, dignity and independence.
The project represents the first stage of the Government's Modernisation of Metropolitan Melbourne Public Sector Residential Aged Care Strategy.
This strategy aims to progressively replace small, ageing facilities with purpose-built facilities that better meet community expectations. It will enable contemporary models of aged care that are dementia friendly, support mental health and are suited to the needs of people with complex care needs.
Residents are expected to move into the facility in early 2021.
This project was delivered in partnership with St Vincent’s Health Melbourne, Lyons (architects) and ICON (builder).
