Please note: As of 1 February 2021, the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) became the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA).
Redevelopment works to almost double the capacity of Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department are progressing on schedule, with the building’s structure now complete.
The $34.9 million redevelopment will increase available treatment spaces from 55 to 120. When complete, the hospital will be able treat an additional 59,000 emergency patients each year.
The upgraded emergency department will include:
- 65 new treatment spaces
- an expanded children’s section
- a medical imaging suite
- a mental health and alcohol and other drug crisis hub
- an expanded administration area.
The expanded children’s section will provide a calmer and more positive space for children, enabling 19,700 to be seen each year.
The new mental health, alcohol and other drugs crisis hub will include 10 treatment beds and a 24-hour short stay unit. This will allow patients who need urgent support to be fast-tracked, freeing up the emergency department for other patients.
Melbourne’s west is growing rapidly each year and Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department is one of the busiest in Victoria, treating around 65,000 patients each year. The Victorian Government’s $34.9 million investment will help more families receive high-quality urgent medical care when they need it, closer to home.
The expanded Sunshine Hospital emergency department is expected to open in late 2021. Learn more about the Sunshine Hospital emergency department redevelopment via our dedicated project page.
