Transforming care – Echuca Cancer and Wellness Centre 18 months on

In June 2023 we opened the purpose-built, $8.3 million cancer and wellness centre in Echuca.

The centre included 12 new treatment chairs for cancer and kidney disease patients across Victoria’s north. It meant more than 1,200 patients each year can receive world-class care, close to home.

Eighteen months on, we explore the new centre’s impact on patients and staff.

A need for centralised services

Julianne Mansfield was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016.

Following surgery, Julianne had chemotherapy treatment at the old cancer and wellness centre in Echuca. At the time this was part of the hospital.

As Julianne remembers, ‘Back then it was difficult, both for the patients and staff, as the room for chemotherapy was upstairs at the end of a long, dark and cold corridor. The staff were wonderful, but the whole experience was difficult as my oncologist appointments were in another older building in the hospital grounds, and I accessed allied health professionals in various other buildings.’

Medical specialists under the one roof

In June 2023, the new Echuca Cancer and Wellness Centre opened.

Located at a more convenient location on Service Street, the new facility brought together a range of medical specialists under the one roof, including oncologists, nephrologists and radiation oncologists.

When Julianne was diagnosed with bone cancer related to her breast cancer at the beginning of 2024, she was treated at the new centre.

‘The Echuca Cancer and Wellness Centre is not only a new, light and comfortable centre,’ says Julianne. ‘It is also a building which caters for all my medical appointments, and a place where support for my wellbeing is considered important. I have accessed specialist appointments, support groups, exercise and relaxation classes, oncology massage and a feeling of belonging to a caring community.’

‘The building itself is welcoming with colourful surrounds and much natural light to make patients and staff feel comfortable.’

Jenny Railton, a chemotherapy and cancer support nurse, has seen benefits for both patients and staff.

‘We are now able to work alongside our visiting consultants in haematology, medical oncology, radiation oncology and renal services through the co-located consulting rooms. Our oncology nurse practitioner can work with them in this space as well alongside our chemotherapy team. This is invaluable in providing comprehensive care to our patients,’ Jenny says. ‘Our cancer care coordinators (cancer support nurse, McGrath breast care and prostate cancer nurse) are located close to our wellness and acute treatment areas.’

‘We have been able to facilitate extra days of treatment for our dialysis patients and increase the number of medical day and chemotherapy treatments, something which would not have been achievable in our previous environment.’

The centre now offers several wellness programs and allied health services in the one location. These include dietetics, exercise physiology, lymphoedema management, yoga, mindfulness, social work group therapy, cooking sessions and oncology massage.

‘We have also been able to facilitate onsite pharmacy services with a dedicated pharmacist and technician within the centre each day. This has been paramount in facilitating safe and timely care to our cohort of patients.’

Designed for calm

The centre’s design provides a calm and welcoming environment for patients and families.

The modern floorplan provides flexible spaces. This means patients and their families can meet clinical teams - and other support workers - with greater privacy.

Tailored wellness programs focus on physical and emotional health and wellbeing during treatment and recovery.

‘Our cancer and wellness centre is a beautiful space to work in,’ Jenny says, ‘and patients have told us they value the new space as well.’

‘It is very functional, light, bright and welcoming to our community visiting the centre.’

A sense of community

For Julianne, the new centre has resulted in feeling part of a community.

‘I cannot say enough good things about the staff,’ she says. ‘From the receptionists, who very quickly remember your name, to the oncologist, oncology nurse practitioner, McGrath breast care nurse, nurses and wellbeing staff. Everyone has my best interests at heart and shows care and consideration with every visit including a smile and a hello, remembering my name, and supporting me positively on this journey. It is wonderful to have all these services in the one building so that it has become like my own cancer and wellbeing community.’

‘Knowing that so many people are on this journey with me has made the experience easier for me to cope with and allowed me to gain the support I need at a difficult time in my life. I feel I am not alone.’

Transforming care

Jenny believes the benefits to the community and to staff have been extensive.

‘Renal patients have been able to receive local treatment instead of traveling to Melbourne, Shepparton, Bendigo and elsewhere’, she says. ‘Some are able to see their physician in the same space.’

For chemotherapy and medical day treatment therapy patients, the benefits have been similar. The increased number of chair spaces has enabled more patients to receive local treatment and engage in wellness services.

The new building has also brought advantages for the staff. ‘Staff are working closely together in a beautiful and cohesive unit’, says Jenny. ‘We are very excited to have a dedicated staff room to gather and consolidate our working relationships.’

‘Offering complex treatment to patients locally, avoiding travel to a larger centre and working towards being able to provide support services to the patient to improve their treatment outcomes are all important to me. To be able to do this in a comfortable and peaceful workspace is very rewarding.’
