Western Health to run the new Melton hospital

Please note: As of 1 February 2021, the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) became the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA).

The new Melton Hospital will be managed by Western Health, the Victorian Government announced today. The Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) is now one step closer to delivering locals their brand new hospital.

Melton is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. The Victorian Government has invested $2.4 million to plan the world-class hospital in Melbourne’s north west.

Western Health, one of Victoria’s largest public health service providers, will operate the cutting-edge 24-hour medical facility in Toolern, on the outskirts of Melton.

Western Health

Western Health currently deliver a combination of hospital and community-based services to over 900,000 people across sites in Melbourne’s west – including the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and the planned $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital.

The health service employs nearly 6,500 people, and has a strong philosophy of working with communities to deliver excellence in patient care.

The new Melton Hospital: what are the next steps?

Initial planning for the new hospital is underway, and six consultants who will carry out the planning and design work have been shortlisted. In 2020 a principal consultant will be chosen, and master planning will begin.

This will involve a detailed investigation into the health needs of the Melton region, and will determine the new hospital’s location, size and what range of services it needs to provide. This careful research will ensure the new Melton Hospital meets the growing needs of the region now, and into the future.

The largest investment in health in Victoria’s history

Melbourne is growing, and our population is predicted to hit almost 8 million – an increase of 60 to 130 per cent – by 2027. As our population grows, so do our health needs. The Victorian Government has pledged $3.8 billion to build new infrastructure with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment – the largest investment in health in Victoria’s history.
