Frankston Hospital redevelopment - Newsletter #4 | April 2024

A hive of activity on-site

The construction site is a hive of activity, with more than 450 workers on site each day.

Work has now started to pour the ninth floor of the main tower and the installation of internal services has started on the lower levels.

Frankston Hospital staff are already able to enjoy some of the benefits of the redevelopment, with teams moving into new administrative spaces which were upgraded as part of the emergency department refurbishment and expansion. These works will now focus on construction of a new emergency short stay unit and a new emergency department entrance.

Construction progress:

  • level eight of the main tower structure completed and level nine underway
  • internal structural works and services installation underway in basement, level one, level two, and level three (main tower)
  • structural works on the multi-deck carpark completed
  • multi-deck carpark façade installation underway.

  • structural steel and roofing will be built for the emergency department's new entry
  • main tower facade panels will start arriving on-site for installation

  • sewer boring works in Beauty Park will be completed.

A guide to your new hospital

Your new hospital has been designed with functionality in mind to ensure optimal flow and efficiency for staff, patients and visitors.

The design offers connections between the new hospital building and the existing, on levels one through to four.

Please note: These images are for illustrative purposes only. Actual location of service may differ.

Your bigger, better hospital will have:

  • enhanced patient access to natural light and sweeping views
  • intuitive wayfinding with landmarks
  • improved staff amenity and safety
  • new transport connections.

A design reflective of the natural landscape

The Frankston Hospital redevelopment design recognises the unique character of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. Through use of colour, material and texture, the design draws inspiration from the region’s:

  • shell middens and fossils
  • sand dunes
  • limestone cliffs
  • granite and basalt rocks
  • wetlands, swamps and marshes, including the Carrum Carrum wetlands
  • tidelines.

Over the coming months, you’ll see the new tower start to reflect the natural surrounds, rich in earthy tones and bathed in natural light.

Advice for someone interested in getting into the construction industry:

‘Go for it! The work environment, the people you meet and how much you learn is so rewarding. The variety of jobs is really interesting. And I love that I’m contributing to a project that will really benefit my local community.’

Chloe took out the Stop Taking A Risk (STAR) award at the 2023 Apprentice Training Awards for her commitment and contribution to a safer work environment.

‘Safety to me means everyone has the right to leave work in the same condition as they arrived. Not only does it mean being safe at work, but it also includes being able to be yourself and feel safe within your work environment.’

‘Inductions, safe work method statements and personal protective equipment (PPE) are a few of the important ways we stay safe at work. These allow everyone to understand the risks, how to safely work around them, and make sure everyone is protected on-site.’

‘There’s a lot more to pharmacy than just dispensing medicines. Our clinical pharmacists provide advice and information to patients and the healthcare teams on the wards.'

'We oversee the medication safety systems which reduce the potential for harm from medicines.’

‘In the redeveloped hospital we’ll have a specialised facility to prepare chemotherapy which we’ve never had before. This will improve our responsiveness and the experience for patients being treated for cancer.’

‘I love working with such a dedicated and talented group of people. I really enjoy the way the organisation is constantly adapting and growing – it keeps me on my toes!’
