Bigger and better intensive care unit now open at Mildura Base Hospital

A new state-of-the-art intensive care unit opened today at Mildura Base Hospital, giving critically ill patients from Mildura and surrounding communities increased access to intensive care services.

The $2.48 million expansion project has increased the number of intensive care beds in the unit from five to eight, and enhanced capacity to provide high quality coronary care. Two more short-stay beds were added along with refurbishments to existing rooms.

The expansion was designed to improve patient flow and reduce waiting times so patients can access the very best intensive care services, closer to home.

Funded through the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, the Mildura Base Hospital intensive care unit expansion is part of a $350 million investment by the Victorian Government, which is the largest of its kind in Victorian history. The fund provides vital upgrades for regional and rural hospitals, ensuring Victorians can access the high-quality care and facilities they need, no matter where they live.

Mildura Base Hospital has received $8.86 million since the fund was established in 2015. This has included new operating theatre equipment and upgrades to the mental health and acute medical wards.
