The Victorian Budget 2024/25 is investing $1.7 billion for health infrastructure projects across the state.
New and improved hospitals
This year’s State Budget will deliver more than $1.6 billion in upgrades and expansions for Austin Hospital, Northern Hospital and Monash Medical Centre.
These projects will help boost capacity, improve infrastructure and ensure Victorians continue to receive high quality health care, closer to home.
Monash Medical Centre tower expansion project
The $535 million Monash Medical Centre tower expansion project includes a new multi-story tower above the newly expanded emergency department.
The tower will house a new operating complex, up to five theatres and 34 pre-op and post-op beds. This will provide capacity for up to an extra 7,500 surgeries a year.
Austin Hospital emergency department expansion project
The $275 million investment at the Austin will add up to 29 extra emergency treatment spaces.
This boosted capacity means more patients can be treated faster. The hospital will support an extra 30,000 emergency patients every year. This will help ensure the hospital can meet the needs of the growing local population.
Northern Hospital emergency department and inpatient unit development project
At the Northern Hospital, $812.5 million will deliver a new emergency department and inpatient tower. The new emergency department will include:
- an alcohol and other drugs hub,
- dedicated acute behaviour treatment space
- and a dedicated paediatric treatment zone.
Once completed, it will increase the number of treatment spaces for emergency patients to almost 200.
Specialist equipment and emergency care
The Engineering Infrastructure Replacement Program will receive $40 million over two years and $35 million will be invested in Victoria’s Medical Equipment Replacement Program.
Upgrading mental health facilities
The Mental Health Capital Renewal Fund will also deliver $10 million in priority infrastructure upgrades for mental health services to improve safety for carers, consumers and staff.
